When I first ran for Mayor, I knew there would be a lot to learn. I just didn’t know exactly what I would learn, what challenges we would face, or where the next four years would take us. What I did know was the kind of Mayor I wanted to be and the commitments I wanted to make. And honestly, we had to start with the basics. We inherited significant challenges, and there was work to do to restore confidence in our Council and our community. We rolled up our sleeves and got to work.
In 2022, I made two important promises. First, to repair the way Council works — how we work with each other and how we work with residents, staff and our partners. I was blessed that the group of people who were elected alongside me shared those goals and ideals. We all believed Council could work better, and that meant listening, being prepared, treating people with respect, asking questions, having honest discussions and working through differences. I believe we’ve made real progress in how we work together.
My second commitment was to restore the reputation and credibility of West Nipissing. That has shaped how I approach the role every day. Every meeting I participate in, every phone call I make and every event I attend, I’m keenly aware that I represent all of us. I want people to see West Nipissing as a capable, professional and respectful municipality — one that is known for being prepared, constructive and willing to work with others.
Being Mayor is also about helping others succeed. I’ve tried to be there for community groups and organizations when they need advice, support, a connection, a bit of guidance or simply someone to help them work through an issue. I think that’s part of the job.
My first campaign was built around four principles: common sense, collaboration, facilitation and fairness. They weren’t just campaign words. They’ve guided how I’ve approached the job.
I didn’t know exactly what the next four years would bring. But I knew where the work had to begin.
Four years later, I believe I’ve done what I set out to do.
